Mike Grainey is Principal of Michael W. Grainey Consulting LLC. He handles renewable energy finance and development, energy policy, climate change issues, and CleanTech. He has over thirty years of experience in energy as a senior federal and state official.
From 2002 to 2009 Mike was Director of the Oregon Department of Energy, a Cabinet agency with a $250 million budget. Mike led Oregon’s efforts to become one of the leading states in energy efficiency, renewable energy and climate change policy. He achieved bi-partisan approval of landmark clean energy legislation with support from utility executives, renewable energy business leaders, environmental organizations and other stakeholders. Prior to becoming Director, Mike was Deputy Director for twenty years, assisting five Directors manage the agency. As Director and Deputy Director he directly advised four Oregon Governors on energy.
Mike was Renewable Energy Advisor of the Oregon Business Development Department from 2009 to 2014. He led Oregon’s efforts to recruit CleanTech businesses; he negotiated state incentives and led overseas trade missions.
Mike worked for the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission from 1972 to 1979. He became Deputy Assistant Chief Hearing Counsel in 1976, helping to manage one of four agency hearing divisions. He handled administrative hearings and federal litigation involving nuclear safety, environmental impacts, alternative energy technologies, quality assurance and other corporate management issues. Mike settled many cases, working with utility executives, environmental organizations and concerned citizens to successfully resolve environmental and safety concerns.
Mike graduated from Gonzaga University and New York University Law School. He is a member of the bar of the states of Oregon and Washington and the District of Columbia.
